DEVELOPMENT: Meta to build $800 million data center in Alabama. Meta has announced plans to build an $800 million data center in Montgomery, Alabama — a major investment that will create 100 new jobs and mark the company’s 20th data center in the United States. The announcement was made during a special ceremony attended by Alabama Governor Kay Ivey, Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed, Montgomery County Commissioner Doug Singleton, and Meta’s Director of Community and Economic Development Brad Davis.

DEVELOPMENT: Goodman Group breaks ground on Los Angeles data center. Goodman Group has officially broken ground on a major data center project near downtown Los Angeles. Announced on March 19, the Goodman LAX01 Vernon project will deliver a three-level, 250,000-square-foot data center on a 5.6-acre portion of a 30-acre site formerly home to the Farmer John meat-packing plant. Completion is expected by mid-2026. “This is the first of many planned data center projects in North America,” said Anthony Rozic, CEO of Goodman North America. Greg Goodman, CEO of Goodman Group, confirmed that this project is part of a broader plan to develop a 500MW footprint in global markets including North America, Japan, Europe, Hong Kong, and Australia.

DEVELOPMENT: Crusoe begins construction on second phase of Texas data center. Crusoe Energy has officially broken ground on the second phase of its expansive AI data center development at the Lancium Clean Campus in Abilene, Texas. This next phase of construction will add six new buildings to the site, expanding the total campus size to approximately four million square feet across eight buildings and pushing total power capacity to 1.2 gigawatts. Completion is expected by mid-2026. Launched in June 2024, the first phase of the Crusoe AI data center project included two buildings totaling 980,000 square feet and delivering over 200MW of power capacity. Those initial facilities are scheduled to go live by the first half of 2025. “Our expansion in Abilene marks a significant milestone for the industry,” said Chase Lochmiller, co-founder and CEO of Crusoe.

DEVELOPMENT: Microsoft files for San Antonio data center. Microsoft is deepening its data center investments in the San Antonio area with plans to build a new $765 million campus in Castroville, Texas. According to a recent filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, the tech giant will construct two single-story data center buildings. The two buildings will span a combined 489,400 square feet and are scheduled to be developed over a 25-month period, beginning in June 2025 and concluding by July 2027. WSP, a global engineering and design firm, is listed as the project’s design consultant.

DEVELOPMENT: Energy Abundance unveils 5GW data center project. Energy Abundance Development Corporation has announced plans for a 5GW, behind-the-meter data center campus dubbed Data City, to be located near Laredo, Texas. Spanning 50,000 acres near the U.S.-Mexico border, the site could become one of the world’s largest off-grid digital infrastructure hubs, backed by its own renewable and hydrogen-powered energy systems. The development will begin with a 300MW phase featuring 1 million square feet of space, slated for launch in 2026. “Data City is a world-class infrastructure project, pioneering a new behind-the-meter approach,” said Brian Maxwell, founder and CEO of Energy Abundance. Board member Andy Steinhubl, a former McKinsey senior partner, emphasized the importance of infrastructure like Data City in the evolving tech landscape.
