NEWS ROUNDUP

DEVELOPMENT: Hut 8 launches 205MW Bitcoin mining facility in Texas. Hut 8 has energized its new Vega data center in the Texas Panhandle, a 162,000 sq ft, 205MW facility now billed as the largest single-building Bitcoin mining site by nameplate hashrate. CEO Asher Genoot said Vega was “built for where we believe the market is going,” designed with modularity and thermal efficiency for future HPC workloads. Jake Palmer, SVP of Development, added that Vega’s architecture is especially suited for AI and HPC use cases where speed and cost matter more than traditional redundancy. Client Bitmain will occupy the entire ~15 EH/s capacity under a colocation agreement, expected to generate $110–$120 million in annualized revenue based on ERCOT pricing.

DEVELOPMENT: Fermi America plans 11GW AI & energy campus. Fermi America, co-founded by former U.S. Energy Secretary and Texas Governor Rick Perry, has partnered with the Texas Tech University System (TTU System) to develop a massive AI and energy campus near Amarillo, Texas. Spanning 5,800 acres, the project—called the Advanced Energy and Intelligence Campus—aims to deliver 18 million sq ft of data centers and up to 11GW of IT capacity powered by nuclear, gas, solar, and wind energy. Geotechnical work is already underway, with 1GW of power targeted by the end of 2026.

DEVELOPMENT: Cipher Mining launches 150MW Black Pearl Bitcoin site in Texas. Cipher Mining has commenced operations at its long-planned Black Pearl Bitcoin mining site in Texas, activating 150MW of capacity in phase one. The facility is expected to reach 300MW once phase two is complete. CEO Tyler Page confirmed current hashing power at 2.5 EH/s, with the full 9.6 EH/s expected online by Q3 2025.

DEVELOPMENT: Google picks Virginia for new data center campus. Google has announced plans to establish a data center in Daleville, Botetourt County, Virginia, with the purchase of a 312-acre site at the Botetourt Center at Greenfield. The development will also include investments in utility infrastructure to support the future campus. Amber Tillman, Google’s Head of Data Center Public Affairs, said the company is optimistic about its partnership with Botetourt and the broader Roanoke region, aiming to drive local economic growth.

FINANCING: Meta seeks $29 billion from private capital to fund US data center buildout. Meta is reportedly in talks with private capital giants—including Apollo Global Management, KKR, Brookfield, Carlyle, and Pimco—to raise $29 billion for its U.S. data center expansion, according to the Financial Times. The plan includes $3 billion in equity and $26 billion in debt. None of the firms or Meta’s financial partner Morgan Stanley have commented. The effort follows earlier reports in February suggesting Meta could form a $35 billion data center fund, with Apollo potentially leading the initiative. Meta currently operates 28 global data center campuses, which support Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and a growing AI infrastructure stack. In May, Meta raised its 2025 capital expenditure forecast to between $64 billion and $72 billion, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg noting total AI infrastructure costs could eventually reach “hundreds of billions of dollars.”
