NEWS ROUNDUP

ACQUISITION: Scale acquires Oklahoma City data center. Scale Datacenter has acquired an 82,000 sq ft data center in Oklahoma City from natural gas firm Expand Energy, in a deal that positions the site to support AI chipmaker Cerebras. The facility was originally built in 2013 for Chesapeake Energy and features 2.9MW of IT capacity with 12,000 sq ft of raised floor space. The data center is expected to go live in June 2025 as part of Cerebras’ rollout of six new AI inference centers across North America and Europe. “We are excited to partner with Cerebras to bring world-class AI infrastructure to Oklahoma City,” said Scale CEO Trevor Francis earlier this year. Cerebras CEO Andrew Feldman recently shared images of the facility on LinkedIn, saying the site “will be ready soon.”

DEVELOPMENT: AWS ramps up global data center expansion. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is aggressively expanding its server farm footprint worldwide while enhancing access to Nvidia's latest GB200 AI chips. AWS CEO Matt Garman announced that the company launched a new data center cluster in Mexico earlier this year and is building additional facilities in Chile, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, and Taiwan.

DEVELOPMENT: Google celebrates Iowa data center. Google hosted a ceremony to mark ongoing construction of its new data center in Cedar Rapids, part of a broader $7 billion investment in Iowa over the next two years. In addition to infrastructure, Google announced a $500,000 commitment to support workforce development—aiming to train over 700 apprentices by 2030 and upskill current electrical workers using AI-integrated curriculum.

DEVELOPMENT: Vantage plans 800MW campus in Ohio. Vantage Data Centers is set to develop a major data center campus in Millersport, Ohio, following Fairfield County’s approval to annex 500 acres from Walnut Township into the village. The campus could feature up to five single-story buildings, each ranging from 120MW to 250MW, totaling an estimated 800MW of capacity. Construction is expected to begin before year-end, with the first facility scheduled to go live in 2027. “They’ve been very aggressive with their timeline,” said Rick Szabrak, Fairfield County’s economic development director. “This is going to be huge for the village.” The campus may operate entirely on behind-the-meter power generation, though specific details have not been disclosed. Vantage did not comment on the project.

ENERGY: AEP Ohio to install onsite power units at AWS and Cologix data centers. AEP Ohio has received approval from the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) to install onsite power generation units at two data centers operated by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Cologix. While the specific locations and capacities remain undisclosed, reports indicate the installations will include Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) from Bloom Energy and natural gas generators. The move is part of a broader initiative between AEP Ohio and Bloom Energy, which last year agreed to deploy up to 1GW of SOFCs for data center use. AEP has already placed an initial 100MW order, with a potential expansion expected in 2025. AWS has committed to a six-year power contract, while Cologix signed a 15-year agreement. AEP and the data center operators will jointly fund the installations, with PUCO allowing financial terms to remain confidential under trade secret protections. The application confirms that no additional costs will be passed to other ratepayers.
