NEWS ROUNDUP

DEVELOPMENT: Google buys 85 acres in Ohio. Google has acquired 85 acres in New Albany, Ohio, for $63 million, signaling a potential expansion of its data center footprint near Columbus. A Google spokesperson confirmed the purchase, stating that while there’s no confirmed development timeline, the acquisition gives the company flexibility to grow if needed. This move builds on Google’s growing presence in Ohio, where it has committed over $5 billion since 2019 for data center development in New Albany, Columbus, and Lancaster.

DEVELOPMENT: Fibernet seeks to rezone 1,100+ acres in Utah for 2GW campus. Fibernet MercuryDelta has secured approval to rezone 1,143.8 acres in Millard County, Utah, from agricultural to heavy industrial use, paving the way for a potential 2GW off-grid data center campus. The site would be powered by the nearby Intermountain Power Plant (IPP). Fibernet, co-founded by Lane Livingstone, is working with Ray Conley of Creekstone Capital on the project. The proposed campus could reach 20 million sq. ft., feature 500MW of battery storage, and scale up to 10GW with 5GW+ of battery capacity.

DEVELOPMENT: Oracle aims to build more cloud data centers than all rivals combined. Oracle's Larry Ellison claims the company will build more cloud infrastructure data centers than all its competitors combined, riding a wave of explosive demand for AI and cloud services. Oracle is currently supporting an enormous buildout:
23 live multicloud data centers, with 47 more under construction
29 Cloud@Customer centers, with 30 more to come in FY26
Recent contracts include Temu and OpenAI, though not all tied to the still-pending Stargate project
Reportedly seeking up to 5GW of data center capacity for AI workloads

EXPANSION: NRG Energy eyes nationwide data center power deals. NRG Energy is preparing a wave of power deals aimed at fueling data center growth across the U.S., according to CEO Larry Coben. The Houston-based energy giant plans to use natural gas, nuclear, solar, wind, hydropower, and battery storage assets to power these upcoming data center facilities. A large portion of the power is expected to come from the $12 billion acquisition of LS Power’s generation portfolio, which NRG announced in May and expects to close in Q1 2026.

FINANCING: Soluna secures $20 million to kick off 35MW phase of Texas-based project. Soluna Holdings has secured financing from Spring Lane Capital to begin construction on a 35MW phase of its Project Kati in Texas. The financing, part of a broader term sheet agreement, includes $20 million from Spring Lane Capital Fund II, with potential for up to $100 million more for future projects. The first phase of Kati 1—set to deliver 83MW total—is expected to break ground in Q3 2025 and become operational in 2026, powering cryptomining operations with behind-the-meter renewable energy. The power will come from the 273MW Las Majadas Wind Project, developed by EDF Renewables and Masdar. Soluna CEO John Belizaire described the project as a turning point for the company: “This investment accelerates our ability to deploy scalable, clean compute where the energy grid needs it most.” Rob Day, co-founder of Spring Lane, emphasized Soluna’s role in converting curtailed renewable energy into compute: “They’re at the forefront of sustainable high-performance computing.”
