NEWS ROUNDUP
ACQUISITION: Amazon acquires $700M data center site. Amazon has acquired the Devlin Tech Park in Prince William County, Virginia, for $700 million. The Bristow-area site spans 270 acres, with Amazon purchasing 70% at $3.7 million per acre. Sold by Stanley Martin Homes, the site is approved for up to 3.5 million sq. ft. of data centers and three substations.
FINANCING: Microsoft invests $60B in Neocloud. Microsoft has committed over $60 billion to neocloud data center companies to expand its computing infrastructure for AI.
DEVELOPMENT: Google explores data centers in space. Google is investigating the deployment of AI chips, Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), on small satellites in low-earth orbit to create solar-powered space-based data centers, under a project dubbed Project Suncatcher. Travis Beals, Senior Director for Paradigms of Intelligence at Google, explained that satellites would remain in near-constant sunlight, allowing continuous solar power, while optical links enable high-bandwidth communication between satellites.
ENERGY: Daikin Applied expands data center cooling solutions. Daikin is expanding its portfolio of data center cooling technologies to support AI, cloud, and hyperscale infrastructure. Yu Nishiwaki, COO of Daikin Applied Americas, emphasized the strategic importance of cooling for reliability and asset protection.
