NEWS ROUNDUP

DEVELOPMENT: Minnesota’s hyperscale data center boom faces regulatory and environmental hurdles. Minnesota is seeing a surge of proposed hyperscale data centers, with at least 13 projects announced statewide, but only Meta’s 280-acre development in Rosemount is actively underway. Other proposals, including Amazon’s 348-acre project in Becker and Microsoft’s 295-acre site in the same city, have been paused or remain in permitting limbo.

DEVELOPMENT: Wiscasset residents push back on proposed “Vampire” data center. A proposed data center on 300 acres next to the former Maine Yankee Nuclear Power Plant in Wiscasset, Maine, is drawing strong community opposition. Residents expressed concerns over potential impacts on local power supply, environmental safety, and the lingering nuclear waste from the plant.

ENERGY: Louisiana approves tax breaks and power for Meta’s largest data center. Louisiana officials have granted Meta substantial incentives and expedited approval for three natural gas turbines to power its new 4-million-square-foot data center in Richland Parish. The facility will require more than 2GW of electricity when completed.

ACQUSITION: Google acquires 950 acres in Monroe County for potential data center. Google has purchased 950 acres of land in Monroe County, Georgia, for $58.5 million as a potential site for a future data center. The property provides Google the option to expand operations if business demand increases. The company currently operates a data center campus in Douglas County near Atlanta, originally built in 2007 and expanded in 2015.
