NEWS ROUNDUP

DEVELOPMENT: Meta taps Electra for low-carbon iron. Meta has signed a supply agreement with Electra, a Colorado-based low-carbon iron producer, to purchase verified environmental attribute credits (EACs) tied to Electra’s clean iron. This supports Meta’s net-zero 2030 supply chain goals, particularly for energy-intensive AI data centers.

DEVELOPMENT: OpenAI, Oracle, and Vantage plan 1GW data center. OpenAI, Oracle, and Vantage are developing a new Stargate data center cluster in Port Washington, Wisconsin, codenamed Lighthouse, expected to provide close to 1GW of IT capacity across four facilities by 2028.

ENERGY: Google turns to gas to power data centers. Google will buy power from a new 400MW gas plant in Illinois that uses carbon capture technology to support its growing data center and AI operations. The Broadwing Energy Center, set to open in 2030, aims to trap 90% of its emissions.

PEOPLE MOVES: Meta begins hiring skilled experts. Meta has begun hiring for key technical roles at its upcoming $800 million data center in Jeffersonville’s River Ridge Commerce Center. The company is seeking experts in engineering, mechanics, and project management as construction nears completion.
